President Donald Trump gave three White House aides $45,000 each as holiday cash gifts, according to executive branch financial disclosure statements cited by CNN.
The recipients were Natalie Harp, Chamberlain Harris and Margo Martin, all of whom earn $150,000 annually in their White House roles.
The White House said Trump has a longstanding practice of giving Christmas gifts to people around him, including employees, and argued that the payments were unrelated to official duties and permissible under applicable ethics rules.
Harp has received particular attention because of her close association with Trump and her role in helping prepare his Truth Social posts.
The Washington Post first reported the payments. Another longtime Trump aide, Walt Nauta, disclosed receiving a $20,000 holiday gift from the president.
