President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio questioned Britain’s handling of an investigation involving five men arrested near RAF Fairford, a U.S.-used air base in England, according to CBS News.
The five British nationals, all in their 20s, were detained Sunday on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act. They were released on bail Monday while remaining under investigation. No explosives or weapons were reportedly found, prompting speculation that the men may instead have been attempting to steal fuel.
British counterterrorism officials said the suspects could potentially have been acting as proxies for a foreign state, knowingly or unknowingly. Iran has denied involvement.
The report noted that British authorities have previously accused Iran’s Quds Force of directing attacks in Europe. Similar allegations involving Russian-backed sabotage are also under investigation in Europe.
