President Donald Trump on Tuesday hosted leading artificial intelligence executives at the White House, where major technology firms agreed to a voluntary framework covering internal and external safety reviews of AI development.
Trump reiterated his opposition to regulations he believes could restrict technological innovation, while stressing the importance of maintaining U.S. leadership in artificial intelligence.
House Speaker Mike Johnson described the agreement as a voluntary set of commitments. Trump also proposed a committee of about 10 people to oversee the broader AI industry.
The agreement comes as Congress faces difficulties advancing comprehensive AI legislation. Industry leaders, including Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, have previously called for safeguards around increasingly capable AI systems, while the new framework places greater emphasis on voluntary industry oversight.
