President Donald Trump said Thursday that the United States will not attack Iran before the November 3 midterm election, according to CNN.

Trump said the administration is engaged in productive discussions with Tehran and remains focused on preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. His announcement came after reports that US officials had been considering potential military strikes before the election.

Trump said the administration would instead maintain economic pressure on Iran. He specifically pledged to keep the blockade of Iranian ports in place, signaling that sanctions and other economic measures will remain central to US policy.

The announcement comes 26 days before the midterm election and follows earlier indications from US officials that the administration was inclined to delay further military action until after voters go to the polls.

According to CNN, the administration has relied on economic pressure for months, but those measures have so far produced limited progress toward negotiations with Iranian officials.

Trump has previously suggested that military action could be reconsidered later, but Thursday’s statement rules out an attack before the election.
