US Vice President JD Vance sent a letter to Iranian Security Council chief Mohsen Rezaei in an apparent effort to address humanitarian concerns, President Donald Trump confirmed on Thursday.

Trump said the outreach focused on delivering medical supplies to people in need, denying that he had instructed Vance to restart peace negotiations. Iran has repeatedly argued that US sanctions restrict civilians’ access to medicines, medical equipment, food and other essential goods.

According to Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency, Tehran received the letter but had not responded by Thursday. Iranian officials are also engaging with mediators over a separate “Seven-Day Plan” aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz.

The communication comes amid an eight-month conflict and growing domestic political pressure on Republicans ahead of next week’s US midterm elections. Voters have expressed concerns about living costs and the administration’s handling of the war.
