President Donald Trump told Russian President Vladimir Putin that he wants a swift end to the Ukraine war and the restoration of U.S.-Russia relations, according to Kremlin officials.

The comments came after U.S. envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff held talks with Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, but the meetings produced no major breakthrough.

The diplomatic efforts unfolded as fighting continued. Overnight Russian attacks on Kyiv killed at least five civilians and wounded 25 others, according to Ukrainian officials, with more than 50 sites damaged, including homes and schools.

The European Commission has approved a €3.2 billion loan to help Ukraine purchase Patriot air-defense components. Zelenskyy is seeking a meeting with Trump around September 20 in New York during the UN General Assembly.

Meanwhile, Russia’s advance remains slow. Analysts at the Institute for the Study of War estimate that, at its current pace, Russia may not capture all of Donetsk until 2032.
