Trump Signs Greenland Security Deal Expanding US Military Access

President Donald Trump, Greenland Premier Jens-Frederik Nielsen and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen signed a new security agreement Tuesday expanding US military access to Greenland, according to CBS News.

The agreement reaffirms Greenland’s status within the Kingdom of Denmark while granting the United States broad access to its territory and airspace. It permits expansion of the existing Pituffik Space Base and allows another US defense area to be established, subject to approval by the three parties.

The agreement has no expiration date and would remain in effect even if Greenland becomes independent. It also prevents non-NATO countries from establishing military bases without approval and increases scrutiny of investments from outside NATO and the European Union.

Greenland and Denmark said the deal reflects changing Arctic security conditions and emphasized sovereignty and self-determination.

Trump said the agreement gives the US long-term control over security requirements on the island and prevents adversaries from establishing military or sensitive economic footholds there.
