The Supreme Court on Monday rejected President Donald Trump’s latest attempt to overturn a $5.6 million judgment awarded to former magazine writer E. Jean Carroll.

The justices declined Trump’s request to reconsider their June decision rejecting his appeal. The court did not record any dissent.

Trump had already paid the $5.6 million under a lower court order. Carroll’s lawyers said the money would remain in an interest-bearing account while Trump pursued his final rehearing request.

Carroll first sued Trump for defamation in 2019. She later filed a second lawsuit alleging defamation and battery after New York expanded the ability of sexual abuse victims to pursue older claims. A jury awarded Carroll $5 million in that case.

The earlier 2019 lawsuit resulted in a separate $83 million judgment against Trump. According to CNN, that case remains pending before the Supreme Court.

The high court rarely grants rehearing requests, making Monday’s decision another setback for Trump in his long-running legal battle with Carroll.
