A political and legal battle over food assistance intensified Tuesday after President Donald Trump declared that SNAP benefits will resume “only when the Radical Left Democrats open up government.”
Trump’s statement on Truth Social came just a day after his administration told a federal court it would use contingency funds to pay about 50% of November’s SNAP benefits during the ongoing government shutdown.

The move followed a federal judge’s order directing the administration to reinstate the payments, at least partially, while the shutdown continues.
Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins said the partial payments could take weeks to process, delaying relief for millions of low-income Americans.

Progressive group Democracy Forward, which sued the administration over the cuts, filed an emergency motion Tuesday demanding faster action.
Responding directly to Trump’s post, group president Skye Perryman wrote: “This is immoral. See you in court.”
