Turkish police raided the Istanbul offices of opposition broadcaster Halk TV on Wednesday, interrupting its live broadcast as a government-appointed trustee took control of the channel.
Hundreds of police officers reportedly prevented staff from entering while authorities searched the building. Editor-in-Chief Suat Toktas challenged the trustee delegation’s head over the decision to halt broadcasting.
Ozgur Ozel, leader of the main opposition Republican People’s Party, condemned the operation on social media, describing it as a “dawn raid” and accusing the authorities of authoritarian conduct.
Turkish authorities had not immediately explained the justification for the raid or the trustee appointment. The incident adds to ongoing tensions over media independence and political opposition in Turkey.
