Two people were killed after an AH-64 Apache military helicopter crashed near Salado, Texas, on Wednesday, according to local authorities.

The Bell County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call shortly after 1:30 p.m. after the aircraft went down in a field near Dove Hollow Road and Market Road 2843.

The report said the crash triggered a grass fire that was described as out of control when deputies arrived.

According to the report, the helicopter was based at Fort Hood, and military officials said their immediate priority was securing the crash site and supporting emergency response operations. Brig. Gen. Ethan Diven, the acting commanding general, said the Army was assisting with the initial response.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, and officials have not disclosed where the helicopter was headed at the time of the incident.

Authorities continued monitoring the grass fire while investigators worked to determine what caused the fatal crash.
