Two custodians were found fatally shot inside Mark Twain Elementary School in Chicago's Garfield Ridge neighborhood Monday afternoon, according to police.
Officers responded to the school near Midway International Airport at about 3:40 p.m. and discovered a 48-year-old woman and a 63-year-old man with gunshot wounds.
The report said both victims were taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where they were pronounced dead.
A weapon was recovered at the scene, while preliminary police radio transmissions described the incident as apparently self-inflicted.
No students were inside the building because classes are scheduled to begin August 24. SEIU Local 73 confirmed that both victims were school custodians.
Area 1 detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding the deaths. Authorities have not disclosed what led to the shooting or whether the two victims knew each other.
