The United States and Russia have agreed to resume high-level military-to-military communication, reopening defense channels that were suspended in 2021 ahead of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

The agreement was reached during talks in Abu Dhabi involving the United States, Russia, and Ukraine.

U.S. European Command said the move is intended to reduce miscalculation and improve transparency between the world’s two largest nuclear powers.

The decision coincides with the expiration of the last remaining nuclear arms control treaty between Washington and Moscow, according to CBS News.

The talks were attended by U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff and senior Trump administration officials.

Witkoff also confirmed the first Ukraine-Russia prisoner exchange in five months, calling it a tangible result of sustained diplomacy.

President Donald Trump has pushed to end the war since returning to office, though negotiations remain stalled over Russian-occupied Ukrainian territory. Ukrainian and Western estimates show heavy casualties on both sides.
