U.S. Government Shutdown Poised To Become Longest In History

The U.S. government shutdown has entered its 33rd day, on track to become the longest in history as Democrats and Republicans remain deadlocked. The standoff has stalled critical programs, with millions at risk of losing food aid and health care subsidies if the crisis continues.

President Donald Trump told CBS’s 60 Minutes that he “won’t be extorted” by Democrats, rejecting demands to negotiate over the renewal of Affordable Care Act subsidies until the government is reopened.

Trump maintains that Democrats are using the shutdown as leverage to expand Obama-era health policies.

Senate Democrats, led by Chuck Schumer, have voted 13 times against GOP proposals to reopen the government, saying Trump and congressional Republicans must first agree to negotiations.

With neither side backing down, the impasse threatens to deepen economic pain and further polarize Washington.
