The United States has invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to attend the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Miami on Dec. 14-15, Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed after meeting Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov at the United Nations.
Rubio said Washington hopes Putin accepts the invitation, describing the summit as an opportunity for him to meet President Donald Trump and other world leaders.
The invitation comes as Washington explores limited ceasefire arrangements involving energy infrastructure and grain-related issues in the Russia-Ukraine war.
Russia, meanwhile, has said it remains open to negotiations but will not suspend military operations during talks.
The Kremlin has also said conditions for peace negotiations are not currently in place, underscoring the challenges facing ongoing diplomatic efforts.
