Amid growing fears of Russian hybrid warfare, U.S. and NATO forces have launched large-scale war games in Sweden aimed at countering espionage and sabotage threats in the Baltic Sea, CBS News reported Tuesday.

The exercises, involving U.S. spy planes, Swedish stealth warships, and a German submarine acting as the enemy, simulate responses to potential Russian incursions, including suspected drone activity and undersea sabotage.

NATO officials say Moscow may be testing how much disruption it can cause to Western infrastructure, including undersea cables that carry global internet traffic and financial data.

Sweden, which joined NATO last year after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, hosted the drills.

Swedish naval commander Paula Wallenburg said Europe is “not at peace, but not at war,” describing the situation as reminiscent of the Cold War.

The Kremlin maintains that Russia is already in conflict with NATO due to the alliance’s continued support for Ukraine.
