U.S. Reviews Border Project Through Texas’ Big Bend National Park

The Trump administration is considering reducing the scope of a planned border project through Big Bend National Park in Texas following opposition to a proposed 30-foot bollard wall.

Customs and Border Protection paused construction activity in August amid protests from environmental groups and local residents.

The agency also paused work on a 61-mile stretch north of the park along the Rio Grande, much of it on privately owned land. The government has since conducted outreach with opponents while reviewing the project.

The proposed construction has drawn criticism from groups including Keep Big Bend Wild, which argues that additional infrastructure is unnecessary because Border Patrol already uses ground sensors and patrols for surveillance in the region. The government’s review could determine whether and how construction proceeds through the park.
