Uber Held Liable In $40 Million Wrongful Death Case

Uber has been ordered to pay $40 million to the parents of 23-year-old Emily Normandin-Parker, who was struck and killed on a Southern California freeway after an Uber driver left her at an unsafe location.

Arbitrator Judge Richard A. Stone found that driver Tran left Normandin-Parker and her friend Luna Moore at an “unsafe and illegal” gore point on State Route 73 in Orange County following a dispute over a cleaning fee.

Stone rejected Uber’s argument that it was merely a technology company and found the company vicariously liable for the driver’s negligence. The decision followed evidence concerning the circumstances of the drop-off and accounts from other riders who had raised safety concerns about the driver.

Normandin-Parker’s parents have established the Emily Normandin-Parker Foundation, which will use proceeds from the arbitration to support ride-hailing safety advocacy.

Uber said it respects the arbitration process but disagrees with the finding that it was legally responsible. The company also said it has strengthened guidance for drivers about avoiding unsafe drop-off locations.
