UCLA Faces Record $1 Billion Settlement Over Discrimination Claims

The Trump administration is seeking a $1 billion settlement from UCLA, according to CNN, as part of an escalating push to reshape higher education and enforce federal anti-discrimination laws.

Last week, the administration froze $584 million in federal funding to UCLA. Chancellor Julio Frenk warned the freeze could severely harm the university’s research mission.

In response, UCLA officials have resumed negotiations with the administration, aiming to restore funding.

A draft settlement agreement obtained by CNN outlines the administration’s terms: UCLA would pay $1 billion in installments, establish a $172 million claims fund for those affected by alleged Title VII violations, and accept new oversight measures. These include installing a resolution monitor and appointing a senior compliance officer.

If finalized, the deal would represent the largest settlement ever secured from a U.S. university. The University of California system has yet to issue a comment.
