A Russian warship carried out a live-fire exercise in international waters off the southwest coast of the United Kingdom on the first day of Prime Minister Andy Burnham's tenure, according to CNN.
The UK's Ministry of Defence said the Royal Navy monitored the drill throughout and remains prepared to protect British national security.
According to CNN, the exercise came as Burnham reaffirmed Britain's continued support for Ukraine during a call with President Volodymyr Zelensky. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov denied the timing of the naval maneuver was intended as a signal but criticized Burnham's pledge to continue backing Kyiv.
The report said the incident follows a recent increase in Russian naval activity near British waters, prompting heightened monitoring by the Royal Navy and renewed security concerns.
