A major Russian oil refinery erupted in flames early Dec. 12 after what regional officials and local reports described as a Ukrainian drone strike deep inside Russian territory.
Residents in Yaroslavl, located more than 700 kilometers from Ukraine, reported at least seven explosions before a fire broke out at the Slavneft-YANOS refinery, one of Russia’s five largest fuel-processing plants.

Independent Telegram channel Astra posted images showing heavy fire at the facility, which produces gasoline, diesel and jet fuel.
Several other regions, including Tver, Smolensk and Moscow, also came under attack. Officials in Tver said a drone explosion damaged a residential building and injured seven people.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reported that Russian air defenses intercepted eight drones headed toward the capital.
Ukraine has not publicly commented. Kyiv has repeatedly used long-range drones to hit Russia’s oil infrastructure, aiming to weaken Moscow’s primary revenue source for its war.
