Ukraine Faces Growing Pressure As Russia Advances In Donbas

The Institute for the Study of War estimates Russia could take years to capture the remaining parts of Donetsk at the current rate.

Ukraine’s battlefield outlook is worsening as Russian forces slowly press toward Kramatorsk and other key cities forming the country’s eastern “fortress belt,” according to CNN.

The report said Russian troops advanced or infiltrated roughly 124 square kilometers in August, although the pace remains far slower than last year. The Institute for the Study of War estimates Russia could take years to capture the remaining parts of Donetsk at the current rate.

Despite heavy Russian casualties, Ukraine has lost ground around Kostyantynivka, while Russian forces are disrupting logistics and preparing the battlefield near Sloviansk and Kramatorsk. Ukrainian officials say civilians face increasingly dangerous conditions, with drone attacks making roads and evacuations difficult.

The fortress belt includes Sloviansk, Kramatorsk, Druzhkivka and Kostyantynivka. Its loss could expose flatter, less defensible territory farther west.

Russian President Vladimir Putin continues to demand control of Donetsk and Luhansk, while Ukraine faces growing pressure to hold its remaining eastern defenses.
