UN Pushes For Renewable-Powered AI Data Centers By 2030

The United Nations is urging technology companies to power all AI data centers with renewable energy by 2030, but energy experts say the target is unlikely to be achieved under current conditions, according to Axios.

The report said UN Secretary-General António Guterres also wants companies to disclose the environmental impact of their data centers, including electricity, water and land use. However, analysts argue that meeting the goal would require a rapid transformation of global power grids within the next five years.

According to the report, electricity demand from data centers is expected to at least double over the next four years as artificial intelligence adoption accelerates. While renewable energy generation continues to grow and is projected to surpass coal globally this year, fossil fuels remain a major source of electricity.

The report added that many technology companies already purchase clean energy credits to offset emissions, but experts caution that such measures do not eliminate the growing physical demand for fossil fuel-powered electricity as AI infrastructure expands.
