UnitedHealth Group reported stronger-than-expected third-quarter earnings on Tuesday and raised its 2026 profit forecast as efforts to control medical expenses gained momentum.
The health insurer expects adjusted earnings of at least $20.50 per share this year, up from its previous forecast of $19.50 to $20. Quarterly adjusted earnings reached $4.69 per share, exceeding analysts’ $4.14 estimate. Revenue totalled $112.69 billion, also beating expectations.
The company is reducing unprofitable contracts while expanding value-based care and artificial intelligence tools. CFO Wayne DeVeydt said medical expenses remain elevated, particularly for hospital services and specialty medicines.
UnitedHealth reported a 15% annual decline in acute hospital admissions and a 10% increase in home health admissions, reflecting efforts to shift care toward lower-cost settings.
