The U.S. Treasury Department has designated Palestine Action as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist organization, placing the UK-based activist group under Washington's terrorism-related sanctions regime.
Founded in 2020, Palestine Action has targeted companies it accuses of supporting Israel, particularly defense manufacturer Elbit Systems. Its campaign has included breaking into facilities and damaging property.
The U.S. designation has drawn criticism from supporters and civil liberties groups, who argue that applying terrorism laws to the group could threaten legitimate political protest. Palestine Action rejects the designation and describes its activities as opposition to the arms trade with Israel.
The decision comes as the UK's ban faces a legal challenge before the Supreme Court, which is expected to determine whether Britain's decision to proscribe the group was lawful.
