Americans’ confidence in the economy fell sharply in September, with The Conference Board’s Consumer Confidence Index dropping 6.7 points to 81.9, its lowest level in more than 12 years.
The Present Situation Index declined 7.9 points to 109.3, while the Expectations Index fell 5.9 points to 63.6, marking its third consecutive monthly decline. Consumers cited higher prices for goods and services and rising oil costs among their concerns.
Concerns about a potential recession also intensified, with 25.4% of consumers expecting business conditions to worsen.
The survey reflects growing uncertainty about household finances, prices, interest rates and economic conditions amid continuing geopolitical tensions and recent Federal Reserve policy changes.
