The U.S. consumer confidence fell to its lowest level in seven months in August as elevated gas prices and economic concerns continued to weigh on Americans.

According to The Associated Press, the Conference Board’s consumer confidence index declined to 89.4 from 90.2 in July. The reading remains within the relatively weak range seen throughout much of 2026 and is well below levels recorded in late 2024 and early 2025.

The report said Americans’ assessment of current economic conditions improved slightly, but expectations for the coming months deteriorated. Gas prices above $4 a gallon have added pressure on household budgets amid the ongoing conflict involving Iran.

The weak confidence figures come less than 70 days before the midterm elections, creating another economic challenge for President Donald Trump and Republicans as voters remain concerned about inflation and living costs.
