The Federal Aviation Administration has hired more than 2,000 new air traffic controllers, reaching 94% of its annual recruitment target, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced Sunday.
The hiring drive included an unusual effort to attract video gamers, whose skills can translate into the demanding work of managing aircraft.
According to the report, the Transportation Department launched the gamer-focused recruitment campaign in April, highlighting abilities such as multitasking, strategic thinking, problem-solving and strong cognitive performance.
The initiative generated more than 12,000 applications within its first 24 hours.
Duffy said successful candidates have reached the FAA Academy faster than members of previous classes. He described the approach as a "game changer" and said the administration is working to build a stronger aviation workforce.
The recruitment effort comes as the FAA addresses longstanding staffing challenges.
The report noted that last year's government shutdown added pressure on air traffic controllers, with employees required to continue working despite delays in receiving pay.
