US Military Rules Out White Phosphorus Leak At South Korea Air Base

The United States military said there was no white phosphorus leak at Osan Air Base in Pyeongtaek, South Korea, after completing an investigation into residue discovered during a routine munitions inspection.

According to the military, the material was identified as harmless surface corrosion caused by environmental exposure rather than the controversial chemical compound.

Earlier, Pyeongtaek city officials issued an emergency alert urging nearby residents to evacuate and avoid skin contact after receiving reports of a suspected chemical leak. The report said the warning was issued as a precaution while authorities assessed the situation.

The United States maintains about 28,500 troops in South Korea. The report noted that the American military presence has periodically drawn public attention and protests in the country.
