Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado said the United States has suggested holding presidential elections in 2027, citing support for that timeline from Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Machado made the remarks in Caracas on Thursday following her return to the country.
Acting President Delcy Rodriguez has overseen steps toward a political transition since former leader Nicolas Maduro was ousted on January 3. These measures include releasing political prisoners and pursuing economic reforms.
Machado, who received the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize, thanked the US government and pledged to mobilize Venezuelan society while challenging the acting government’s legitimacy.
Although Machado is pressing for a vote next year, officials are prioritizing 2027. Neither Washington nor Venezuela’s government has officially announced an election date.
