President Donald Trump has approved a 30-year civilian nuclear agreement with Saudi Arabia that could allow the kingdom to enrich its own nuclear fuel, according to CNN, citing a U.S. official.
The report said the deal could be announced as early as Wednesday before being submitted to Congress for review. Under the agreement, American companies would provide technology and technical expertise to help develop Saudi Arabia's civilian nuclear program.
Critics have long argued that uranium enrichment technology, while used for civilian energy, could also provide a pathway toward developing nuclear weapons.
CNN reported that Israel has historically opposed Saudi access to nuclear technology, while Iran continues to maintain its own uranium enrichment program.
The report said the Trump administration revived negotiations after earlier efforts under the Biden administration stalled following the October 7, 2023, Hamas terrorist attacks.
