The U.S. Senate is set to begin procedural voting on Monday on President Donald Trump's nomination of Jay Clayton to serve as Director of National Intelligence, with a final confirmation vote expected later this week.
According to the report, Clayton would oversee the nation's 18 intelligence agencies if confirmed, succeeding Tulsi Gabbard, who left the position in June.
The report said Clayton's nomination was narrowly approved by the Senate Intelligence Committee in a 9-8 vote.
Lawmakers also questioned his past decisions involving subpoenas issued to New York Times journalists and his refusal to acknowledge the outcome of the 2020 presidential election.
Republicans, who hold a 53-47 majority in the Senate, are expected to provide the votes needed to confirm Clayton despite unified Democratic opposition.
According to the report, many senators are seeking a permanent replacement for acting Director of National Intelligence Bill Pulte, whose leadership has drawn criticism over his limited national security experience and workforce reductions within the agency.
