President Donald Trump has nominated Jay Clayton, the former U.S. attorney for Manhattan and former SEC chairman, to serve as Director of National Intelligence, according to the report.
Democratic lawmakers reportedly pushed for Pulte’s removal before supporting the renewal of key surveillance legislation, contributing to a legislative stalemate.
According to the report, Trump views Clayton as a candidate who could ease concerns and help move the process forward. However, Clayton’s nomination is also drawing scrutiny because he lacks extensive intelligence and national security experience.
The report said Clayton, known for relatively moderate political views, has received backing from President Trump and support from the CIA director. His appointment now requires Senate confirmation before he can assume oversight of the nation’s intelligence agencies.
