A sailor went overboard from the USS Abraham Lincoln last month but was quickly rescued and medically evaluated, a U.S. official told CNN. The circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear.
The incident comes as lawmakers and military families raise concerns about the aircraft carrier’s record-setting deployment and conditions aboard the ship. The Lincoln has been deployed for more than 250 days and has gone over 200 days without a port call while supporting U.S. operations in the Iran war.
The Navy disputed claims of increased suicidal thoughts or attempts aboard the carrier, saying it has not observed such a rise and has medical and mental health personnel available.
Sen. Richard Blumenthal is demanding answers from Pentagon officials, while lawmakers have called for further investigation into crew welfare and deployment length.
