Democrats swept several high-profile races in the 2025 elections, marking an early referendum on President Donald Trump’s administration.

Democratic candidates won all four major contests of the night — the New York City mayoral race, the governorships in New Jersey and Virginia, and California’s Proposition 50 redistricting measure. According to CBS News, voters cited economic concerns and dissatisfaction with the country’s direction as key motivators.

In Virginia and New Jersey, moderates Abigail Spanberger and Mikie Sherrill secured victories, while New York City elected Zohran Mamdani, a democratic socialist, over former governor Andrew Cuomo, who ran as an independent. Mamdani’s win underscored a sharp ideological divide within the party.

In California, voters approved Prop 50, allowing Democrats to redraw congressional districts ahead of next year’s midterms.

Exit polls showed strong anti-Trump sentiment driving support for the measure, signaling renewed Democratic momentum heading into 2026.
