Wall Street securities firms earned $45.9 billion in the first half of 2026, putting the industry on pace for a potential annual profit record, according to a report from New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli.

Underwriting fees increased 68% during the first six months, while global equity issuance rose 76.5%, with strong activity including the SpaceX IPO contributing to the gains. The industry recorded its strongest two-quarter period on record.

Major firms also reported strong results across key businesses. Goldman Sachs posted its third consecutive quarterly record for stock trading, while debt issuance increased 11.3%. The gains have raised expectations for higher bonuses across the financial sector.

The securities industry contributed at least $26.3 billion to New York’s state budget, according to the report. If the current pace continues, annual profits could exceed $90 billion, although inflation and the Iran war pose risks. Upcoming third-quarter earnings will provide a test of whether the momentum is continuing.
