An ongoing Ebola outbreak in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo has claimed over 1,000 lives, according to Africa's top health agency.
Declared on May 15, the outbreak is particularly dangerous because it is caused by the Bundibugyo virus—a strain with no approved vaccines or treatments.
It is currently spreading and causing fatalities faster than any previously recorded outbreak, including the devastating 2013–2016 West Africa epidemic.
