Streets across Iraq erupted in celebration as the last remaining U.S.-led coalition forces completed their official withdrawal, closing more than two decades of intense military presence following the 2003 invasion.
Crowds gathered in Baghdad and other major cities waving flags and marking what leaders hailed as a historic milestone for national sovereignty. Yet, beneath the festive atmosphere, a deep sense of unease persists.
Many citizens and regional analysts voice fears that the sudden security vacuum could empower powerful Iran-backed militias or create a vulnerable opening for a resurgence of the Islamic State.
