At least five people were killed and 87 remain missing after a fire broke out aboard a passenger ferry in waters off the western Philippines, the coast guard said Thursday.
The vessel, the MV June Aster, was traveling from Manila toward the tourist destination of Coron in Palawan province when the blaze engulfed the ship on Wednesday night.
Coast guard officials confirmed that 42 survivors have been rescued, while emergency crews continue active search and rescue operations to locate the dozens of individuals still unaccounted for among the 134 people listed on the manifest.
