Israeli President Isaac Herzog accepted the certified results of last week’s parliamentary elections on Wednesday, officially opening consultations with political leaders to determine who will attempt to form a new government.

Herzog’s formal certification of the election outcome deals a major setback to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s attempts to question the validity of the vote following key losses by his governing bloc.

By declaring the results binding, the president set off a crucial phase of negotiations among political factions that could potentially see Netanyahu’s rivals assemble a coalition and bring an end to his current administration.
