President Donald Trump stated that planned U.S. military strikes against Iran were halted after Tehran requested urgent direct negotiations.
Backed by regional partners including Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Qatar, the upcoming talks aim to address denuclearization and maritime security in the region. This was the last chance for Iran to sign a good document, he said.

Trump: They don’t like saying that they’re talking. So I say, wait, we’re in talks. Big deal. We’re in talks, and they’ll sometimes deny it, even though they spend hours and hours together talking. No, the talks are going along.
We were going to hit them very hard yesterday—harder than any attack since World War II, I think I can say from a point of knowledge. We were set to go, and they called. In addition, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Qatar called. I got calls from numerous people—I don’t use the word 'begging,' but in particular, Iran did not want to be hit.
They said they want to talk. They want to talk about the Strait, but more importantly, from my standpoint, about the denuclearization of Iran, because that’s what this is all about. This is why I’m doing this, and it should have been done for 50 years now by other presidents or other countries, but nobody did it. It was time. We hit them hard with the B-2s more than a year ago, and that knocked out their potential capability. We’ve done a great job.
When we’re talking, we say we’re talking. If we’re not, I’ll say it. But we are talking right now at the request of Iran—backed by Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, and many other countries whose leaders I’m friendly with. They all wanted to give this a last chance. This is the last chance for them to sign a good document.
