London’s iconic Oxford Street has officially kicked off its high-profile transformation, closing a nearly one-kilometer stretch between Orchard Street and Great Portland Street to all cars, buses, and bicycles.
Vehicles are now being diverted onto surrounding roads to make way for a fully pedestrianized shopping district.
This dramatic traffic ban marks the first phase of an ambitious makeover designed to revive the storied retail hub. City planners aim to reinvent the pedestrian experience by planting trees, installing green seating areas, and constructing vibrant new public squares, betting that a car-free environment will draw shoppers back to London’s famous high street.
