A U.S. residential cruise ship offering a three-year around-the-world journey has abruptly suspended operations in Cambodia, stranding over 200 passengers thousands of miles from home.
The vessel, Villa Vie Odyssey, anchored in the port city of Sihanoukville when operator Villa Vie Residences announced it could no longer sustain soaring fuel expenses in Asia.
Monthly fuel costs per cabin reportedly quadrupled, forcing the company to order immediate disembarkation as it prepares to file for bankruptcy.
The sudden halt leaves dozens of international retirees and remote workers—many of whom sold their primary real estate to purchase floating homes—scrambling for temporary lodging and flights back home.
