A devastating surge of wildfires surrounding Spokane, Washington, has forced the evacuation of roughly 60,000 residents (~5,000 homes) and destroyed at least 600 structures—including homes, local businesses, and outbuildings—authorities confirmed Sunday.

Dubbed the Spokane Complex Fires—comprising three primary uncontained blazes: the Old Trails, Fairview, and Meadowview fires—the inferno has scorched over 8.2 square miles (21 square kilometers) across eastern Washington's rugged terrain. State officials warn that the current destruction is rapidly rivaling some of the most severe wildfire seasons in state history.
