In a landmark political upset, democratic socialist-backed candidate Nithya Raman has defeated incumbent Mayor Karen Bass, becoming the first challenger since 2005 to unseat a sitting Los Angeles mayor.

Raman, an India-born urban planner and City Council member since 2020, secured victory following a tightly contested race centered on affordable housing, public transit, and a citywide homelessness crisis affecting an estimated 44,000 residents.

Her historic win reflects the rising influence of progressive leadership in major American cities, bolstered by voter dissatisfaction over Mayor Bass’s administration and its response to the devastating January 2025 Palisades and Eaton wildfires, which claimed 31 lives and destroyed thousands of homes.

Bass officially conceded on November 5, pledging a seamless administration transition. As Raman prepares to take office, she remains focused on delivering her progressive vision while forging a distinct leadership identity for Los Angeles.
