Short bursts of intense exercise may trigger a stronger and faster molecular response in the body than longer periods of moderate exercise, according to a Rockefeller University study published in Cell Reports Medicine.
Researchers found that six 30-second sprints changed roughly one-quarter of measured blood proteins within minutes, while 90 minutes of moderate exercise produced smaller and more delayed changes.
Researchers comparing health data from more than 53,000 Biobank participants found that sprinting affected 32 of 33 proteins associated with lower disease risk, with many also linked to slower biological aging.
The findings suggest exercise intensity may play an important role in determining its biological effects. However, further research is needed to establish how these molecular changes translate into long-term health outcomes.
