Federal investigators have executed a search warrant at a GKN Aerospace facility in Garden Grove, California, as authorities examine the circumstances surrounding a chemical emergency that forced tens of thousands of residents to evacuate.

The incident involved an overheated storage tank containing methyl methacrylate, a chemical commonly used in manufacturing processes.

Officials said the tank was at risk of exploding after temperatures and internal pressure increased significantly. The immediate danger was ultimately reduced when a crack formed in the tank, allowing pressure to escape.

The emergency prompted evacuation orders affecting more than 50,000 residents in surrounding communities as firefighters, hazardous materials specialists, and emergency management teams worked to stabilize the situation.

Federal authorities have since launched an investigation into potential violations connected to the incident.

💡
The FBI confirmed it executed a search warrant at the facility, while federal prosecutors stated that technical experts are assisting in the review and analysis of evidence collected during the operation.

The investigation comes amid increased scrutiny of the site’s environmental compliance history. GKN Aerospace previously reached settlements related to environmental violations involving the facility.

Authorities emphasized that the investigation remains ongoing and that no conclusions regarding potential wrongdoing have been reached.
