What Countries Will Pope Leo XIV Visit On His First Latin America Tour

Pope Leo XIV will make his first apostolic journey to Latin America as pontiff with an 11-day visit to Uruguay, Argentina and Peru from November 6 to 17.

According to the report, the itinerary announced by the Holy See Press Office includes stops in ten cities and marks the Pope's first official visit to the region since his election.

The report said the visit to Argentina will be the first by a pope in nearly four decades. Pope Francis, Leo's predecessor, never returned to his native Argentina during his 12-year pontificate, making the upcoming visit particularly significant for the country's Catholic community.

Peru is expected to be one of the most symbolic stops on the tour. According to the report, Pope Leo XIV holds Peruvian citizenship and served as bishop of Chiclayo from 2015 to 2023 after first arriving in the country as an Augustinian missionary in the 1980s.

The Pope will begin the trip in Uruguay, where Catholics represent a minority of the population compared with the rest of Latin America.

According to the report, he is also expected to meet Peruvian leaders during his visit as the country enters a new political chapter under President Keiko Fujimori.
