President Donald Trump has acknowledged that the Iran war was largely responsible for Republican losses in the midterm elections but insisted he would make the same decision again to prevent Tehran from developing nuclear weapons.

Democrats secured control of both the House and Senate on Tuesday, marking the first time in two decades that a Republican president has lost both chambers of Congress. Vice President JD Vance had urged Republicans to recognise the conflict's political consequences.

The war has reportedly cost American taxpayers an estimated $47.1 billion so far. Despite the electoral setback, Trump defended the military campaign during his first public remarks after the election, while also highlighting plans for a major White House ballroom.

Democrats also secured electoral trifectas in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan and Pennsylvania. The party is preparing a First 100 Hours agenda aimed at reversing key Trump administration policies.
