South Korea has announced plans to invest more than $576 billion in artificial intelligence and semiconductor projects over the coming years, aiming to strengthen its position in the global AI race, according to Reuters.

President Lee Jae Myung, joined by the heads of Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, said the initiative will focus on expanding chip manufacturing, AI infrastructure and data centers.

Samsung and SK Hynix, along with suppliers, will invest about 800 trillion won ($517.9 billion) to build two new semiconductor fabrication plants each in the country's southwest region. Local governments are also expected to contribute additional funding for related projects.

Lee said the expansion is needed because existing semiconductor hubs around Yongin and Pyeongtaek are nearing capacity. The report said the southwest offers abundant unused power for future growth.

However, industry experts cautioned that new chip clusters will require significant investments in electricity, water, logistics and skilled labor to meet rising global AI demand, Reuters reported.
